8th Edition

Comeback of the Decade In 1993, the Magic: The Gathering trading card game started a gaming revolution. Today, six million players worldwide agree the Magic TCG is the best. The Core Set - Eighth Edition marks the 10th Anniversary of Magic and to celebrate the event, this set was created with a very special concept in mind: it contains at least one new card never before printed in a Core Set from every Magic expansion ever produced by Wizards* (34 sets in all!). Over the last year, the Magic Research & Development team has worked closely with the players and visitors to this website to help make the Core Set the set you wanted it to be. Packed full of old famous cards such as Rukh Egg and Underworld Dreams, Eighth Edition will be redefining decks for years to come. In addition, Eighth Edition introduces the new improved cardface design that allows for larger art, more card text, and enhanced premium design. Once you get a look at the new cards, you'll start to realize just how many great cards are in the Core Set this time around. So welcome back your old favorites and see why the Core Set - Eighth Edition is what Magic is all about.

7th Edition

6th Edition

Magic: The Gathering® players have something to look forward to with Classic™ (Sixth Edition). For the starter-level Magic® player ready to make the leap to advanced Magic play, the Classic two-player game is the logical next step. Magic players new to advanced play will enjoy access to cards from earlier expansions and exposure to a richer play environment, while expert players will find Classic a cost-effective way to play in sealed-deck tournaments. Classic features 350 cards, including cards from these Magic expansions: Visions, Mirage, Alliances, and Weatherlight.

5th Edition

Released in March of 1997, Fifth Edition was by far the largest version of the Magic: The Gathering; basic set. Fifth Edition contains a total of 429 cards, not including the basic lands.

Alternate 4th Edition

4th Edition

Released in April 1995, Fourth Edition was a new version of the Magic: The Gathering; basic set. In a continuing attempt to balance and add new flavor to the game, fifty-one cards were removed from the Revised Edition and 122 cards from previous expansions were added, bringing the total cards to 378.

3rd Edition

The Revised Edition of the basic set was released in April 1994 with 306 cards. The white-bordered set "cleaned up" several rules and graphical oversights from the previous Unlimited basic set.

Unlimited

These first 10 million cards sold out quickly, and in December 1993, the Unlimited Edition was released. This white-bordered set consisted of the same 302 cards as the Beta print run.

Beta

After the Alpha print run of 2.6 million cards, some corrections were made and the remaining 7.3 million cards were released as the "Beta" set (302 cards).

Alpha

Premiered at Origins '93 in July of that year, Magic: The Gathering; was first released to the general public on August 5, 1993. The "Alpha" set consisted of 295 cards.
